In late 1998, the Filmhouse came to me and said that they’d run a couple of horror events while I’d been away, but they’d quite like to see the return of Dead by Dawn. Woo Hoo!!

From an all-nighter with a special guest, the festival became a three day event, which meant more films, more guests and more events.

The really self-indulgent programming this year included ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’, ‘Stagefright’, ‘The Beyond’, ‘Lizard in a Woman’s Skin’ and the achingly beautiful ‘Dust Devil’ which, if you haven’t seen it, is an absolute classic. It was a joy to show ‘Freaks’ again, and the real treat for me was being able to show William Castle’s film ‘The Tingler’ which I have long adored. |
The National Premiere of Jean Rollin’s ‘Little Orphan Vampires’ was, along with it’s genial director, the surprise hit of the festival and led us to being given the World Premiere of ‘La Fiancee de Dracula’ in 2000.
Along with Guest of Honour, Special Guest Richard Stanley was on hand to intro and discuss his films, and despite all my worries about coming back to the festival after such a long break, I can only judge from all the positive feedback that it was a total success and demanded another...
